PhD - Scholarship: Institute for Mediterranean Studies/FORTH, Rethymno, Greece‏

The Institute for Mediterranean Studies / Foundation of Research and Technology - Hellas (IMS/FORTH, Rethymno, Greece, website: http://www.ims.forth.gr/index.php?l=e ) is offering a Research/Ph.D. scholarship in the field of Modern Economic and Social History.

The researcher will work for four years (commencement date: June 1, 2012), with an annual stipend of at least 8,000 EUROS, doing research for the project: "The Black Sea and its Port-cities from the 18th to the 20th Century. Development, Convergence and Linkages with the Global Economy." (Action "Thales"/ financed by the Greek National Strategic Reference Framework)

The researcher is expected during the same period to prepare a Ph.D. thesis, under the co-supervision of IMS/FORTH and the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete, on a topic related to theEconomic and Social History of Istanbul during the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century.

The candidates are expected a) to hold a Masters Degree (M.A., M.Phil. or equivalent) in a relevant scientific field and b) to have a good knowledge of Turkish and of one of the following languages: English, French or German. Previous research experience will be appreciated.
